U14 Football Championship: Dunshaughlin 3-10 Longwood 2-09

Longwood U14s travelled to Dunshaughlin for their second Championship fixture on Sunday, looking for a measure of revenge after their narrow defeat to the same opposition in the recent League Final. With a number of players unavailable, Longwood arrived with the bare minimum panel of 13 and no substitutes, meaning every player in black and white would have to go the distance in what promised to be a demanding encounter. Luka Farrell captained the side on the day.

Dunshaughlin settled quickest and struck the first two points of the game before Longwood opened their account through Cuan Saunders, who finished superbly from a tight angle after excellent running from Patrick Maguire.

The opening half, however, was largely controlled by the home side. Their powerful running game and aggressive tackling repeatedly put Longwood under pressure, while two well-taken goals and a string of points saw them build a commanding lead. Yet Longwood showed tremendous character to stay in touch.
A swift counterattack, started by William Birmingham and carried on by Tadhg Shram, ended with Cuan Saunders coolly slipping the ball into the corner of the net. The goal sparked Longwood into life. Thomas Maguire followed with a point before Lochlan Rowley landed an outstanding long-range two-pointer to leave Longwood trailing by six at the break.

One of the defining features of the first half was the relentless running of the Dunshaughlin forwards and the physicality of their defence, which made scores difficult to come by. At the other end, Longwood's backs were forced into a rearguard action. William Birmingham, Erikas Petkus, Aidan Sharkey and Conor Baldwin were outstanding as they repeatedly broke up attacks in what had developed into a tense and hard-fought Championship contest.

The second half began much like the first, with Dunshaughlin attacking at pace. Longwood goalkeeper Aodhan Freeman produced a magnificent point-blank save to keep his side in contention, and moments later Dylan Dixon opened Longwood's second-half scoring with a well-taken point.

A brilliant tackle by Luka Farrell led to a free for Longwood, which Lochlan Rowley converted. Soon after, Dylan Dixon pointed again from a free and then launched a massive two-point free over the bar to suddenly leave the scoreboard reading Dunshaughlin 2-09, Longwood 1-09. What had at times looked like becoming a comfortable home victory had become a real battle.

As the game grew increasingly physical, Longwood's midfield and half-back line began to dominate possession. On the left-hand side of the field, Luka Farrell repeatedly won crucial balls and drove his team forward. Alongside Lochlan Rowley, Thomas Murray and Thomas Maguire, Longwood strung together passages of intelligent possession, combining strong tackling, sharp hand-passing and relentless work rate to launch attack after attack.

Unfortunately, after several Longwood wides, Dunshaughlin struck a decisive blow with an excellent team goal. Longwood refused to surrender and continued to press forward. Cuan Saunders grabbed his second goal of the afternoon following a late attack, but time was running out.

When the final whistle sounded after a fiercely contested and highly entertaining Championship encounter, the scoreboard read:

One of the key factors in the closing stages was squad depth. Dunshaughlin were able to introduce fresh legs throughout the contest, while Longwood's 13 players battled through the entire game without respite. Lochlan Rowley produced another tireless display despite carrying an injury, while Erikas Petkus showed tremendous determination by playing on after picking up a painful foot injury at a crucial stage of the second half.

As fatigue inevitably began to tell in the final ten minutes, Longwood's effort and commitment never wavered. Conor Baldwin was immense at the heart of the defence, breaking up numerous attacks with his physical presence and intelligent positioning. William Birmingham displayed excellent hands all afternoon, fielding and distributing high ball superbly. 

Captain Luka Farrell produced his finest performance of the season, dominating his direct opponent, winning possession repeatedly and driving Longwood forward from the half-back line.

Further up the field, Thomas Murray covered every blade of grass with his energetic running, while Dylan Dixon contributed some crucial scores when Longwood needed them most. 

Cuan Saunders showed excellent awareness and finishing ability to score two well-taken goals and keep Longwood in touch throughout.

While defeat was Longwood's fate on this occasion, there remains plenty to play for in the Championship. Indeed, perhaps the strongest indication of how much this group has progressed came after the final whistle, when the Dunshaughlin manager complimented the Longwood players on their performance. He noted that many of the Dunshaughlin players are also members of their highly-rated Division 1 U14 panel, competing at the top end of underage football in Meath. 

A final word should also go to the referee, who enjoyed an excellent game. He allowed play to flow leading to a tough, physical Championship contest while maintaining control, helping to produce a match that showcased skill, determination, sportsmanship and some outstanding football from both sides.

Longwood may have come up short on the scoreboard, but the performance showed once again that this team continues to grow, compete and will be a force for the remainder of the Championship.
